How Lantern Hunt Works
Find it. Remove it. Document it. Every verified removal is a small contribution to the broader effort to protect native habitats.
The basics
- Learn to identify. The app includes identification information for spotted lanternflies at different life stages and for their egg masses.
- Find and remove. When you find spotted lanternflies or egg masses, remove them and document the removal with photos in the app.
- Submit for verification. Removals are reviewed before they count. Verified removals earn points.
- See community activity. Verified removals appear on a shared map so participants can see the collective effort.
Staying motivated
Lantern Hunt includes a few game elements to make the work more rewarding:
- Points and leaderboard for verified removals
- Streaks for staying active
- A customizable lanternfly avatar
- Virtual nymph companions you can hatch and collect
Please hunt responsibly
- Follow any guidance from your state or local authorities about invasive species in your area.
- Only search on property where you have permission to be.
- Be careful around trees, traffic, and other hazards.
Lantern Hunt is an independent project and is not affiliated with any government agency or environmental organization. Individual removals are one part of a much larger effort, and the app makes no guarantee about ecological outcomes.
